Luciobarbus microcephalus , in English Smallhead Barbel , Spanish Barbo Cabecicorto and Portuguese Barbo-de-Cabeça-Pequena , is a medium-sized barbel species that is endemic only to the Iberian Peninsula.

description

Luciobarbus microcephalus differs from other species of the genera Luciobarbus and Barbus 45 to 50 scales in the lateral line row (SL), the last unbranched fin ray of the dorsal fin is spiky and serrated on most of its rear edge. The dorsal fin is concave in its rear part. The head length is 22 to 27% of the standard length . The lower lip is narrow, without a middle lobe, the tip of the lower jaw is not covered by the lower lip. The fish are already fully grown with a body length of 26 to 40 centimeters. The final weight is between eight and nine kilograms. In waters like the Lagunas de Ruidera, Peñarroya or Tablas de Daimiel, these weights are even exceeded. Specimens weighing nine to twelve kilograms have already been caught in the Rio Guadiana and Tajo.

distribution and habitat

Distribution area of Barbus microcephalus (green)

Luciobarbus microcephalus occurs in Portugal and Spain . Their occurrence is particularly common in lowland rivers such as the middle and lower reaches of the Rio Guadiana or in the river system of the Rio Tajo . It was partially introduced in Morocco . Their natural habitat are deep and slow flowing rivers and streams as well as reservoirs.

Way of life

L. microcephalus feeds on plants, detritus and small animals.

Use

Luciobarbus microcephalus is used as a sport fish for anglers in some regions.

Endangerment status

The fish species is classified as endangered by the IUCN . In the Bern Convention , Appendix III, L. microcephalus is listed as a species of fish worthy of protection. The habitat and density of individuals of Luciobarbus microcephalus will continue to decrease in the future. It is assumed that by 2020 only half of the population will exist that was there at the beginning of the 21st century. The main reasons for the threat are water pollution, water deprivation for agricultural irrigation and dam construction, such as the planned Alquedi dam. Introduced alien fish species are another problem.
