Lucy in the light

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucy in the light is a non-fiction book by Markolf Niemz . It was published on August 22, 2007 by Droemer- Verlag. The book is the second part of the Lucy trilogy and deals with near-death experiences as well as the “soul”, an immaterial principle that is the bearer of the life of an individual and his constant identity through time, as part of a fictional framework .

action

Lucy is a tour guide. It first explains some physical principles. The theory of relativity with the structure of space and time and the contraction of length is broached and religious views are addressed. As a scientist, she is not only curious, she also proposes a number of theories. At many points in the book, she confronts the reader directly with assertions and thus stimulates them to think. In addition, the protagonist tries to explain why there is life in this world and says that space is important for the soul to experience what love and knowledge are.

Basic idea

On the basis of religious ideas about the afterlife and reports from people with near-death experiences, Niemz tries to explain what happens when the soul leaves the human body. Niemz draws attention to the fact that many statements made by people with near-death experiences are similar in one point, namely that a very bright light appears to those affected and is getting bigger and bigger. From this he concludes that the soul is moving forward at an extremely high speed. At an approaching (not at full) speed of light, the soul only encountered rays of light from the front, creating a circular, luminous image that grows larger and larger until the soul is completely enclosed by light at full speed of light. According to Niemz, the soul thus reaches infinity or eternity.

Form and language

Niemz has tried to explain physical patterns in such a way that even readers without knowledge of the theory of relativity and borderline sciences can follow the course. For this he uses numerous illustrations with which he z. B. can explain in a simple way the searchlight effect, which gives the impression that everything is moving at high speed from the front towards the viewer.

Classification in the work of the author

Niemz, professor of medical technology, often deals with near death research. Experiences of this research were already mentioned in the first part of his Lucy trilogy , Lucy with c . In the second part of the trilogy, near-death experiences are dealt with in greater detail, especially the descriptions of those affected. The attempt to build a bridge between religion and science is typical of Niemz's Lucy works. It should be made clear to the reader that a dialogue between the two is important and inevitable for the future. This is justified by the fact that physicists did not live in a different world than theologians.

When Lucy in the light will also address the question of the meaning of life. The protagonist Lucy develops in the books. Her thoughts in the second part tie in with those of the first. While in the first part she was full of curiosity and raised many questions that were also answered, this knowledge made her appear a bit more self-confident in the second part.

In May 2007, Niemz founded the "Lucy's Children" foundation named after his books. The foundation supports charitable projects, including building schools and roads in economically backward countries.

reception

The opinions of the critics differed. The easy-to-understand writing style was generally praised. In simple words, the author introduces the reader to knowledge in quantum physics and special relativity . The reader seems to be touching the idea that the soul flies through space at the speed of light after death, but Niemz ventures far into the field of theology, for example with the statement that existence is a game and presumably only knows the goal of being in Perfect sense of its Creator.
