Markolf H. Niemz (* 1964 in Hofheim am Taunus ) is a German biophysicist .

Live and act

Markolf Niemz studied physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (diploma) and then bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) (Master of Science). It was founded in 1992 with a thesis on the construction of a pulse-compressed Nd: YLF laser to study the plasma-induced ablation of tissue to Dr. rer. nat. did his doctorate and then habilitated in physics in Heidelberg.

Until 1999, Niemz was head of the optical spectroscopy department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques (IPM) in Freiburg . In 2000, he received a call to the chair of Medical / Biomedical Engineering at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, settled as a professor at the Medical Faculty Mannheim. Since then, Niemz has been director of Mannheim Biomedical Engineering Laboratories (MABEL), a joint venture between the University of Heidelberg and the University of Mannheim . He conducts research in the fields of laser-tissue interactions, laser medicine, electrical biosignals and patient monitoring. He was the first scientist in the world to use ultrashort laser pulses in dentistry to treat tooth decay painlessly.

Niemz also deals with a new branch of mortality research , so-called near- death research . With his science novel Lucy with c , he became known to a wide audience in 2005 by comparing near-death experiences with relativistic effects from Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Niemz teaches that eternity is in the light in which all distances have the value zero. It also offers a new, physical explanation for near-death experiences: If something of us is immersed in light while dying, the so-called searchlight effect allows us to perceive a dark tunnel with a bright light at the end. The light itself is a world memory and provides the review of life that the dying often report about.

Niemz's novel was the first self-published German non-fiction book to make it onto the Gong bestseller list. From the author's fee for his Lucy trilogy, Niemz founded the charitable and charitable foundation Lucy's Children . This foundation works to ensure that children from the poorest countries in the world also have access to love and knowledge.
