Ludolf (Becoming)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludolf (also Liudolf ) was abbot of Werden and Helmstedt from 974 to 983 .

Life

Its origin is unclear. Albert K. Hömberg sees in him a scion of the house of the Counts of Werl . This is supported by the fact that the counts were bailiffs of Werden at the time and that the name Ludolf occurs in the family. Paul Leidinger apparently sees no connection to the family. The older tradition of becoming sees him as a Frisian.

In 978, during the time of his abbacy, he was obliged to take Bishop Heinrich I of Augsburg in Obgut, who had participated in a conspiracy against Otto II . At the suggestion of Ludolf, the relics of St. Ida were raised for veneration in the church of Herzfeld by Bishop Dodo of Münster . Both the abbot and the bishop received small parts of the relic. These were solemnly brought to the monastery church on December 1, 980 . The events were recorded by a monk from Werden,

There had been a long dispute with Bishop Dodo about tithe rights. Apparently a divine judgment was carried out through the rehearsal with red-hot iron. The dispute was ultimately settled through a compromise. The tithe from Herzfeld and Vechtler went to Münster, while the estates in Forkenbeck and Ichtern were to remain tithe free. Dodo then gave the tithe in Vechtler, Senden and Tetekum to Werden in his memory and that of his successors . There is also a donation from Ludolf. The day of his death was January 2nd or 3rd.
