Ludovica Cristina of Savoy (born July 27, 1629 in Turin , † May 14, 1692 ) was a princess from the House of Savoy .

Life

Ludovica Cristina was a daughter of Viktor Amadeus I and his wife Princess Christina of France . Ludovica Cristina's father died in 1637. Her mother took over the guardianship of Ludovica Cristina's brothers Francesco Hyacinth and Karl Emanuel and thus the reign of Savoy - Piedmont . Ludovica Cristina's uncle, Cardinal Moritz von Savoyen , together with his younger brother Tommaso von Savoyen involved the widow in a four-year war of succession. The skillfully acting Christina of France emerged victorious from this conflict. In the peace treaty of 1642, she forced her brother-in-law to resign from his office as cardinal and to marry Ludovica Cristina, who was only fourteen. Maurizio di Savoia was able to return to secular status because he had not received ecclesiastical ordinations due to a dispensation from Pope Paul V when he was appointed cardinal.

The wedding between the 14-year-old and her 50-year-old uncle took place in September 1642. The couple first moved to Nice , where Maurizio held the office of governor. He died in Turin on October 3, 1657. He left his widow no children, just a huge mountain of debt.
