Ludwig Foehse (born March 14, 1849 in Dessau ; † July 29, 1898 ) was a German writer for young people. In the course of his life he published numerous adventure stories for children and young people, mostly in the genre of colonial literature.

Life

Although Ludwig Foehse is one of the most important authors of the colonial stories, little is known about him biographically. Foehse was born in Dessau and worked here as a businessman. In addition, from around 1880 until his death in 1898, he ran a cloakroom and woolen store in his hometown. In the 1890s he devoted himself to writing and reached a supraregional audience with his stories addressed to young people, which mainly belong to the genre of colonial literature. According to his publisher, he is said to have got to know the German colonies in East Africa on his own travels. It can be assumed that he traveled to parts of North America as well as Africa in his youth.

Literary work

Foehse's works are mostly stories from America and East Africa under the influence of German colonies. Most of these stories are about the indigenous peoples of the respective continent. Exceptions to this generalization are, for example, stories of pirates and pirates, which take place in America as well as in East Africa, as well as four stories that deal with the first Sino-Japanese war (1894-1895). Foehse's numerous adventure stories can be assigned to the genre of colonial literature, which often appeared in popular and youth literature.
