Ludwig Lesser (writer)

Ludwig Lesser (* December 5, 1802 in Rathenow as Levin Jacob ; † December 2, 1867 in Berlin ) was a businessman who appeared in Berlin from the 1830s to 1860s as a writer and founding member of several societies in Berlin.

Life

Lesser was born as the son of Jakob Levin, later Lesser, in Rathenow. The family was called Lesser from 1812, Levin was named Ludwig. He attended Friedrichswerder High School in Berlin up to secondary school.

In 1818 Lesser joined the M. Oppenheim bank as an apprentice (from 1820: M. Oppenheims Söhne), where he worked as an accountant (1831), cashier (1837) and dispatcher (1853) up to an authorized signatory (1860s) ) worked up. In 1830 Lesser joined the Society of Friends , of which he remained secretary from 1835 until the end of his life, whose chronicle he compiled for its 50th anniversary in 1842, and which made him a permanent honorary member for his services.

In addition to his professional activity, he published articles in various magazines and almanacs under various pseudonyms and wrote poetry. In 1827 Lesser was one of the founders of the Sunday Society Tunnel over the Spree , in 1833 he founded the weekly newspaper of the Sunday Society, which he edited until 1841. He carried the tunnel name Petrarca. In 1845 Lesser was one of the initiators and founding member of the cooperative for reform in Judenthume, which was constituted in 1850 as the Jewish Reform Community in Berlin and of which he was a member of the board for several years.

In 1835 Lesser married Rosette Fabian (1811–1886), a daughter of the Berlin businessman August Fabian and granddaughter of Marcus Élieser Bloch . In 1839 their son Richard Lesser (1839–1914) was born, father of the landscape architect Ludwig Lesser .

Ludwig Lesser was buried in the Jewish cemetery Schönhauser Allee in Berlin.
