Ludwig Merzbacher

Ludwig Merzbacher (born February 9, 1875 in Florence , Tuscany ; † September 30, 1942 in Buenos Aires ) was a German psychiatrist who first described Pelizaeus Merzbacher's disease with Friedrich Christoph Pelizaeus .

He studied in Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin and completed his studies in Strasbourg in 1900. He then worked until 1902 as an assistant at the Physiological Institute in Strasbourg, then until 1904 in the psychiatric clinic in Freiburg, 1904–1906 in Heidelberg and 1906/1907 in Munich in Alois Alzheimer's laboratory . From 1906 to 1910 he was in Tübingen, where he also completed his habilitation in 1906 . In 1910 he was appointed head of the laboratory at the psychiatric clinic in Buenos Aires. 1914-1919 he was director of the pathological-anatomical department of the "Clínica Modelö" and from 1924 senior physician at the German Hospital in Buenos Aires.
