Ludwig Piffl

Ludwig Piffl (* 1900 in Klosterneuburg ; † 1975 ) was an Austrian teacher and Quaternary researcher .

Life

After completing his primary school teacher training, Piffl taught at various schools in the Tulln district . From 1947 until his retirement in 1965 he was a teacher and later headmaster in Neustift im Felde .

At a young age he showed a strong interest in his homeland and was already working in 1930 on the local history magazine Tullner Gau and subsequently on the Tulln Guide , the Tulln local calendar and the map of the Tulln district. However, he gained international reputation as an important Austrian ice age researcher.

In 1957 Ludwig Piffl was appointed high school supervisor, in 1964 he became an honorary citizen of Neustift, and in 1965 Cardinal Franz König awarded him the honorary badge of St. Arch-Martyr Stephen, 2nd class. In the same year he also received the Golden Decoration for Services to the Province of Lower Austria . In 1971, Federal President Franz Jonas awarded him the title of professor.

Ludwig-Piffl-Platz in Neustift was named after Ludwig Piffl. There is a piece of a petrified pine tree from a gravel pit near the Haleberg in a showcase , which Piffl had dated using the C-14 method . In 1970 a memorial stone for Ludwig Piffl was erected. After the school was demolished, it was moved to its current location on Ludwig-Piffl-Platz.
