Ludwig Zid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Zid (* 1898 ; † 1953 ) was an Austrian traveler to South America .

From 1928 to 1931 the wagon entrepreneur Zid went on an adventurous journey with his wife Aloisia, called Luise, and their son Kurt (called Bubi), born in 1927, as well as the German mechanic Kurt Schultz. After a long drive from Vienna to La Coruña in northern Spain and a crossing of the South Atlantic with his Ford Model A , which had been poorly converted into a boat , the automotive crossing of South America followed . The trip took place under sometimes extreme conditions. Aloisia Zid gave birth to another son on the way in 1931.

The documents of this trip, above all Aloisia's travel diary, went unnoticed for decades, not least because the automobile company Ford was less interested in this promotional coup than Ludwig Zid had expected. The loss of large amounts of film and photo material during the crossing to Cuba may also have had fatal effects. The family withdrew to Austria disappointed.

In 2008, the German magazine Stern devoted a detailed article to adventure travelers. In 2014, this odyssey was the subject of an Austrian documentary film entitled The Unbelievable Journey of the Zid Family , directed by Gunnar Walther.

In 1953 "Bubi" Zid died of a traffic accident, six months later Ludwig Zid died of a serious illness. His wife Aloisia survived him by 15 years. William Zid, who was born on the trip, died in 2014. Nothing more is known about the fate of Kurt Schultz.
