The cable car Haifa Cable Car is under construction cable car in Haifa . It is intended to provide additional access to the district on Mount Carmel . The construction work began with the laying of the foundation stone on June 27, 2017 (planned completion in 2020).

Geographical location

The valley station of the train is located at the junction of local public transport, Lev HaMifratz, which also includes a tower station for the Haifa – Bet Sche'an railway line (upper level) and Haifa – Beirut – Naharija railway line (lower level) and a bus station . The planned light rail to Nazareth will also start from here . The mountain station is located near the University of Haifa , intermediate stations serve the Technion , the technical university. A cable car was chosen as the mode of transport because in Haifa there is an extreme difference in altitude of almost 500 meters between the lower town, which is only a few meters above sea level, and the upper town on Mount Carmel.

Technical parameters

The cable car overcomes a height difference of 460 meters over a length of 4.5 km. In addition to the valley and mountain stations, the cable car will have four other intermediate stations:

  • Krayot Junction (formerly: Checkpost )
  • Dory Street
  • Technion Center
  • Upper Technion

There will be 150 cabins in circulation, each with space for 10 people. They should follow one another at an interval of 15 seconds. The travel time over the entire route will be 19 minutes. In the initial phase, a transport of 1200 people per hour is planned, which will eventually be doubled. The forecast determined a requirement for 2 million passengers per year.

State and development

The planning phase for the project lasted 13 years. The foundation stone was laid on June 27, 2017. The Israeli transport minister Israel Katz and the mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav, were involved . The construction costs are estimated at around 70 million euros . After the operator concession had been put out to tender, a consortium made up of the Israeli bus company Nativ Express and the Turkish cable car operator Bursa received it . The train is to run integrated in the tariff system of Haifa's local public transport.
