Roméo Virgile Accursi (born June 7, 1836 in Paris , † 1919 ) was an Italian violinist , conductor and composer . He was known as chief conductor of the Orchester philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and the orchestra of the theater in Vichy .

Life

Roméo Accursi was a nephew of Gaetano Donizetti . From 1853 he attended the Conservatoire de Paris with a major in violin in the class of Jean-Delphin Alard . In 1854 he won a second and in 1855 a first prize. On March 5, 1858, at a concert by the double bassist Giovanni Bottesini in the Salle Herz, he played a fantasy by Jean-Delphin Alard on La fille du régiment by Gaetano Donizetti and was then engaged for a series of concerts there until 1859. Another concert took place on April 21st, 1858. This time Giulia Grisi and Enrico Tamberlik performed, among others . Gioacchino Rossini valued Accursi very much. On April 1, 1859, Accursi played a caprice for violin and piano on themes from Rossini's opera Otello at a salon concert that Rossini held at home . On May 6, he played a double quartet by Louis Spohr together with Vincenzo Sighicelli and others in the Salle Herz , Rossini and Daniel-François-Esprit Auber , the director of the Paris Conservatory, were best man at Accursi's wedding to the pianist Hurand in June 1859, who had also received a first prize at the Conservatory and who was highly valued by Rossini as an interpreter of his unpublished piano compositions. In August 1859, the young couple performed solo in various concerts. They also gave concerts together in 1860, for example in Vichy in September . In August 1861 Accusi gave a concert in Bad Ems together with Henri Herz . In January 1862, Alard appointed Accursi to replace him with the functions of violin professor during his absence from the Conservatory. In 1862 Accursi went on a tour of Germany together with his wife. They were particularly successful in Baden-Baden. He then played in the orchestra of the Theater Italienne and in the orchestra of Jules Pasdeloup . In the 1865 season he conducted the orchestra of the Theater des Casinos in Vichy. In December 1865 he conducted performances of Rigoletto and Don Pasquale at a guest performance at the Théâtre-Italien in Rouen . Also in March 1866 he directed Don Pasquale in Caen . In January 1868, Le Ménestrel named him the second chief conductor of the Théâtre-Italien and announced his engagement for the summer season 1869 in Vichy. At concerts in 1868 he accompanied performances of the Ave Maria (Bach / Gounod) on the violin. In 1868 and 1869 Accursi held the position of third conductor of the Théâtre-Italien. In the summer of 1868 he was again a conductor at the theater of the casino in Vichy. In the spring of 1869 Accursi made a guest appearance with the Théâtre-Italien in Caen. This time with performances by Don Pasquale and La serva padrona by Giovanni Paisiello . During the summer season he again directed the orchestra of the Vichy Casino. From 1872 to 1885 he was chief conductor of the Casino Orchestra in Monte Carlo. In 1876 he was chief conductor in Lille and Vichy. In Monte Carlo he conducted the concert for the inauguration of the opera on January 25, 1879. On March 12, 1881, he conducted the 4th Piano Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns in Monte Carlo with Saint-Saëns as the soloist. In the concert hall of the casino, an afternoon and an evening performance were given daily by the approximately seventy-person orchestra conducted by Accursis. Later he was again chief conductor of the orchestra of the Theater of the Vichy Casino.

After a concert on August 15, 1862, Giacomo Meyerbeer wrote in his diary that the piano player Accursi had played a piano piece by Rossini with elegance, correctness and skill, but cold and without swing . Her husband is a mediocre violinist who does not play completely clean .
