history

There has been a mountain inn on the Kronberg since June 28, 1878. However, this was not on the summit, but on the Jakobsalp. It was Josef Anton Rusch (1896–1990) who had the idea of building a second mountain inn on the summit. A material ropeway with three supports was required for its construction. The new mountain inn was opened on June 9, 1935. But the Second World War thwarted the landlord's plans: the visitors stayed away and the material ropeway fell apart. On November 17, 1959, the mountain inn and the associated facilities were sold to Karl Garaventa (1922–1989).

Like his father of the same name, Garaventa was a pioneer in the cable car business. He ran the company "Karl Garaventa's Söhne AG" in Gossau , inherited from his father , a company for cable car and mechanical engineering (today part of the Doppelmayr / Garaventa Group ). His plan was to build the first large cable car. On May 1, 1960, the idea was approved by the district community, and on June 7, 1962, the Jakobsbad – Kronberg AG aerial cableway was officially founded in the park of the Jakobsbad spa house. Construction began on April 16, 1963, and for this purpose the old material ropeway was put back into operation. The grand opening of the cable car took place on July 18, 1964.

There was great interest in the railway. The 20,000th passenger was greeted on August 6, 1964, and the millionth passenger was received on August 5, 1972. 2011 was the best year in the company's history. The Kronbergbahn is considered highly profitable. It appears in fourth place among the most profitable mountain railways in Switzerland in the “Under ten million turnover” group. In 2017 the mountain railway carried 161,299 people, 110,828 of them in summer and 50,471 in winter. A total of 8,664 trips were made.

activities

In addition to the mountain railway, the Jakobsbad – Kronberg AG cable car operates several restaurants, such as the Kronberg mountain inn and a restaurant in the valley station. In the adventure world at the valley station, she also operates a bobsleigh run, a zipline and a fairy tale world. The bobsled run has a length of 1,450 meters.
