The name Gonten comes from "Gumbton" (12th century): "Puddle of water because of the nearby peat bog". A gonte still refers to a puddle in the Appenzell dialect . The district of Gonten was created in 1872 from a merger of the Rhode Gonten with the half- testes Stechlenegg and parts of Rinkenbach . Today Gonten includes Jakobsbad to Gontenbad and Rapisau . The best-known elevation is the Kronberg ( 1662  m above sea level ).

On December 31, 2014, the district had 1,439 inhabitants. 83.25% were Roman Catholic , 10.08% Protestant Reformed , 2.31% belonged to another religion or Christian denomination and 4.36% gave no information or were non-denominational. 120 pupils attended primary school and 30 children attended kindergarten.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of St. Verena was built in 1863 in a neo-Gothic style. On the left side altar is a statue of the Madonna from the 17th century. In the sacristy there is a processional cross from 1595 with a crucifix created around 1320 .

The Roothuus takes its name from the formerly red paint. It was built in the 18th century as a four-story town house. There are wall paintings in one of the rooms.
