Gonten is a district in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in eastern Switzerland .
history
The name Gonten comes from "Gumbton" (12th century): "Puddle of water because of the nearby peat bog". A gonte still refers to a puddle in the Appenzell dialect . The district of Gonten was created in 1872 from a merger of the Rhode Gonten with the half- testes Stechlenegg and parts of Rinkenbach . Today Gonten includes Jakobsbad to Gontenbad and Rapisau . The best-known elevation is the Kronberg ( 1662 m above sea level ).
population
On December 31, 2014, the district had 1,439 inhabitants. 83.25% were Roman Catholic , 10.08% Protestant Reformed , 2.31% belonged to another religion or Christian denomination and 4.36% gave no information or were non-denominational. 120 pupils attended primary school and 30 children attended kindergarten.
Attractions
The Catholic parish church of St. Verena was built in 1863 in a neo-Gothic style. On the left side altar is a statue of the Madonna from the 17th century. In the sacristy there is a processional cross from 1595 with a crucifix created around 1320 .
The Roothuus takes its name from the formerly red paint. It was built in the 18th century as a four-story town house. There are wall paintings in one of the rooms.
economy
An important local employer is Goba AG (formerly Mineralquelle Gontenbad), which among other things fills the lemonade Flauder .
tourism
There are several tourist attractions in Gonten, such as the Kronberg bobsleigh run and the rope park, which opened on June 16, 2007, the golf course, the Jakobsbad – Kronberg cable car , the 5 km long barefoot path from Jakobsbad to Gontenbad, the winter hiking trail , the cross-country ski trail, the Nordic Walking Center, the Gontenbad natural moor bath and the Studen, Alpsteinblick and Lauftegg ski lifts.
