geography

The mountain is the highest peak in the Wicklow Mountains and the highest in Ireland outside the mountains in County Kerry . With its large summit plateau, it makes a massive impression. It is bounded on two sides by ice age, steep cirques (called North Prison and South Prison ).

Ascent to the summit

Lugnaquilla as seen from Wicklow Way .

Due to its proximity to Dublin , it is a popular destination for mountain hikers. There are no excellent paths. The main routes of ascent are from Glenmalure , Aghavanna and the Glen of Imaal . The route over the Glen of Imaal runs through a military training area and is therefore occasionally closed.
