Luis Diaz (percussionist)

Luis Diaz (born November 6, 1957 ) is an American percussionist and music teacher .

Díaz is an expert on Afro-Caribbean percussion. He founded and directed several ensembles of his own, including Veneno , Borinbomba and The Luis Diaz Quintet, and worked with musicians such as Brian Lynch , David Hazeltine , Melvin Rhyne , Peter Bernstein , Berkeley Fudge , Eddie Butts , John Benitez , Rick Germanson , the Ko-Thi Dance Company , the percussionist Dumah Saafir , the rumba musician Carlos Eguis-Aguila , the jazz musician Buddy Montgomery and the Cuban singer and percussionist Virgilio Marti . He also performed with the group Madisalsa , the groups of Jeno Somlai and Eric Jacobson, and Connie Grauer's Rumbrava .

From 1999 to 2006 Díaz taught at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music , where he led workshops with Dave Mancini and David Ortiz . He has also given workshops at the University of Wisconsin , Alverno College , Cardinal Stritch University , Milwaukee Tech College, and the Percussion Gallery in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
