Luis Fernández Gutiérrez (born September 29, 1972 in Argomilla , Cantabria ) is a former Spanish football player .

Player career

The beginnings

Luis Fernández started his career as a professional footballer in his Cantabrian homeland with Racing Santander in 1993, after he had already played in the Segunda División for Torrelavega in the 1992/93 season. At Racing, the little defender was slowly introduced to first division football. So he came in his first season in the Primera División only a single use, while he ran up only thirteen times in the following two seasons before he became an undisputed regular player in the 1995/96 season and made the breakthrough.

Real Betis

In the summer of 1996, Luis Fernández moved to Real Betis , where he would play for ten years. Although he was able to qualify with his team several times for the UEFA Cup and once even for the Champions League , the bitter move into the Segunda División was also on the agenda in the 1999/2000 season. But already in the 2000/01 season, Betis managed to get back on the road with Luis Fernández as a "part-time force". Between 2001 and 2003 he again fought for a regular place, which he could no longer defend in the following years. His biggest achievement was winning the Copa del Rey in 2005 with Betis.

Racing

In the summer of 2006, after ten years and at the age of 34, Luis Fernández returned to his old place of work and signed a contract with Racing Santander , where he was able to win a place in the first eleven despite his age. In the summer of 2009 he ended his active career after playing 300 league games.
