history

Copy of the marble monument for Queen Luise

In 1808, the citizens of Berlin decided to erect a monument to Queen Luise in the south-eastern area of the zoo, where she liked to walk. After Friedrich Wilhelm III. and Luise had returned to Berlin from exile in East Prussia , an altar- like stele with a marble bowl, created by Gottfried Schadow , was inaugurated on a small island on December 24, 1809 . The Prussian court gardener Justus Ehrenreich Sello designed the area in terms of gardening. Since that time the island has been called Luiseninsel .

On March 10, 1880, a marble statue of the queen, created by the sculptor Erdmann Encke , facing the monument to King Friedrich Wilhelm III, was presented to the public. The monuments, surrounded by iron bars, stood in various horticultural squares. To the south, on the actual Luiseninsel , a marble monument to Prince Wilhelm was erected by Adolf Brütt on May 3, 1904 , because the stele with marble bowl in honor of Queen Luise was lost.

The reconstruction of the complex with the monuments was carried out according to a plan by Eduard Neide from 1880, historical photographs and garden archaeological excavations. The entire ensemble was given its current appearance in 1987 when the facility was restored on the occasion of Berlin's 750th anniversary .

The original of the weather-damaged queen statue was first replaced by a concrete copy and brought to the lapidarium on the Landwehr Canal. The production of a marble copy on the occasion of the "Luisenjahr" 2010 failed because of the high costs. For this it was decided to restore the original statue. In 2013 it was again installed on Luiseninsel.
