Lukiškės Square

The Lukiškės Square ( Lithuanian Lukiškių aikštė ) is a square in the center of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . The square is located between Vasario 16-osios ir J. Tumo Vaižganto streets in the former Lukiškės suburb, not far from Lukiškių prison .

history

At the end of the 18th century, the Catholic Church of Philip and Jacob, the monastery and a hospital were built. In 1860 the territory became a marketplace . It was then that integration into the city began.

The place was a place of execution on the orders of Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov-Wilensky , Governor General of Vilna . In 1920 the memorial stone was laid for the victims of the January uprising in 1863 . In the same year it was renamed after Józef Piłsudski (1867-1935), Polish marshal and politician, during the Soviet occupation to Soviet and then to Lenin Square . In 1991 the Lenin monument was removed .
