Participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot discovered him. Charcot named the mountain after the French film pioneers Auguste (1862–1954) and Louis Lumière (1864–1948), sponsors of his research trip .
