The Lune Aqueduct over the
River Lune

The Lune Aqueduct is an aqueduct that runs the Lancaster Canal across the River Lune in east Lancaster , Lancashire in England .

The aqueduct was built by John Rennie senior between 1794 and 1797 . The structure spans the river at a height of 18.6 m with 5 arches made of bricks for a total length of 202.4 m. Pozzolans were added to the cement in the trough , which made it possible for the concrete to set under water. It was imperative that construction be completed before the onset of winter, so work was carried out through the night towards the end of the construction period, which contributed to the cost of £ 48,000 being 2.6 times the estimate, preventing an aqueduct from being built could be built at the southern end of the canal on the River Ribble . The Lune Aqueduct is a Grade I protected architectural monument.
