Lupus II (Gascony)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

. Lupus II (Basque: Lope , French: Loup , † after 778) was a duke or prince of the south of the Garonne (now Gascogne ) settled Basques ( Wasconum dux / princesps ) in the 8th century.

In 769, Lupus offered asylum to the Aquitaine Duke Hunold , who had fled to him , but in the same year he handed him over to King Charlemagne after he had threatened him with war. On this occasion, Lupus submitted to the sovereignty of the Frankish king. It is mentioned for the last time for the year 778.

Lupus II is assumed to be the progenitor of the later Vasconian dukes and various count dynasties of Gascogne, see House Gascogne . His son was believed to be Duke Adalric, who appeared in 787 .
