The Lusitan language is an extinct language that was formerly spoken by the Lusitans in the west of the Iberian Peninsula .

While an assignment to the Indo-European languages is considered likely, the further classification of the Lusitan language is controversial. Some authors cite a non- Celtiberian origin of the language, as it shows a sound development that is atypical for the Celtic .

A relationship with the Celtic languages , which were also widespread in this area, has therefore not yet been proven. Although some Lusitanic terms are similar to those of other mainland Celtic languages, Lusitanic receives Indo-European * / p /, which has been lost in the Celtic languages.

The language is evidenced by a few short writings that were dated to the 1st century AD. These were written in the Latin alphabet . In addition, place names of Lusitan origin also exist in the region.
