Luther Standing Bear

Luther Standing Bear (born December 1868 in South Dakota , USA ; † February 19, 1939 in Huntington Park , California , USA ) was a chief of the Oglala - Lakota - Sioux who also worked as a writer, teacher, interpreter and actor.

Life

Standing Bear was originally a Brulé (Sichanghu), but considered himself an Oglala all his life because he had at some point joined this Lakota tribe. He became one of the earliest students at the Carlisle Indian School. In 1902 he joined Buffalo Bill and toured Europe with his Wild West Show. He later starred in Hollywood films.

In his works he criticized the American Indian policy and revised the white historiography; more than Charles Eastman , he demands self-determination of the Lakota and a bicultural education program. Something about himself and his tribe is told in the book The Land of Their Fathers .
