The historic ramparts with the moat are in the immediate vicinity.

history

As in many other places in Germany, an oak tree was planted in Stade in memory of the reformer on November 11, 1883 on the occasion of Martin Luther's 400th birthday .

On November 10th - Luther's birthday - there had been school holidays in both Stader city churches in 1883, so the next day a pageant organized by the citizens' association led through the city, which ended with a speech at the horse market. The keynote speech was given by the educator and cartographer and then Stader seminar director Carl Diercke , who published the famous Diercke school atlas. After that, the festival assembly moved on over the Hohentorsbrücke to plant the "Luther Oak" at this point.

Exactly 126 years after the planting, Stade's Mayor Andreas Rieckhof , Superintendent Thomas Kück and Ludger Ernst put up a notice board on November 10, 2011 at the suggestion of Ludger Ernst next to the "Luther Oak". Previously, the Hanseatic City of Stade had the old memorial stone under the "Luthereiche" restored. The notice board reminds of the reason for the planting with a short text.

In the 1970s, the shortage of parking spaces led to five parking spaces being built under the tree, which resulted in partial surface sealing of the tree location. In order to maintain the vitality of the "Luther Oak", tree care takes place at annual intervals .
