Previous construction

The old church in Kälberfeld was until 1905, about 50 meters east of the Hörsel bridge between the railway embankment and the banks of the Hörsel in the center of the village. When the railway was built, demolition of this church building was considered, and in 1845 the Thuringian Railway Company paid 2,700 thalers as compensation to the community. The Romanesque village church, however, remained until 1905 and was still used for worship. Only the cemetery by the church was abandoned and relocated to the neighboring town of Sättelstädt . In addition to the traffic on the railway line, the latent risk of flooding in the Hörsel was a reason for the abandonment of this old church.

As early as the 19th century, the parish wanted a larger and more representative church. The capital paid out as compensation served as the basis for the construction of the new building. However, the dispute over the new building site dragged on for over four decades. Finally, in 1904, an agreement was reached on the building site on Triftweg. The architect Alfred Cramer from Gotha designed a neo-Romanesque church for this purpose , which was consecrated as the Luther Church on December 3, 1905 , in honor of the reformer Martin Luther .

The church faces east-west. Numerous demolition stones from the previous church were used in the foundations. The building material - sandstone - comes from the quarries of Winterstein and Seebergen. The main room measures 10.5 × 9.0 m; the choir measures 5.1 × 4.3 m.

In December 1993 the church was consecrated again after a general renovation. Since then, the church has been illuminated by spotlights in the evening and morning hours.

Furnishing

The two bells were already hanging on the tower of the old church. They were cast in 1748 and 1802. At the request of the state government, both bells were removed in 1917, only the large bell returned, the small bell was replaced by the Franz Schilling und Sons foundry in Apolda in 1925 . The painted windows in the chancel, of which the middle one depicts the transfiguration of Christ , are of particular value . In the anteroom of the church there is a plaque with the list of the victims of the world wars.
