The Luther Church is a church building of the Protestant Church in Konstanz on Lake Constance. It stands in the Altstadt district , but outside the historic old town, on the eastern edge of the Paradise area, which was developed after the city wall was removed . The church is surrounded by Lutherplatz, at the transition from the Upper Laube to the Lower Laube. It is oriented in a west-northwest-east-southeast direction.

Church building

The church was built between 1865 and 1873.

The tower was restored around 1975.

Bells

Friedrich I (Baden, Grand Duke) donated three bells for the Luther Church in Constance.

  • Peace bell with the coat of arms of the city of Constance
  • Friendship bell with the coat of arms of Prussia

The third bell, the Liberty Bell, with the Baden coat of arms, has stood in front of the church since the late 1950s for static reasons and serves as a memorial.

organ

The organ of the Luther Church was built in 1980 by the organ builder Peter Vier (Lahr-Oberweiler) and added in 1987. The instrument has a total of 33 sounding registers on four manuals and pedal. A special feature is the bomb barden work (I. Manual). In addition, some stops of the Bombarden work and the main work can also be controlled as independent stops in the pedal. The Echowerk is swellable by means of a hand lever.

music

The Luther Church is mainly used for concert purposes. The Bach Choir of Constance is particularly “resident” there. The most famous series of events include the weekly "Little Concert" and the "Bach Days of Constance". Michael Stadtherr (* 1984) has been cantor at the Luther Church since 2018.

Freedom bell

In front of the church a bell is presented to the public, which reminds of Friedrich I (Baden, Grand Duke) , of the early efforts for freedom, German unity and the commitment to the poor.

Monument to Jan Hus and Hieronymus of Prague

On June 6, 2015, the 600th anniversary of his death, a monument to the Bohemian theologian and reformer Jan Hus was ceremoniously unveiled on the square between the two lanes of the Upper and Lower Laube, opposite the Luther Church . This location was chosen because the Luther Church is on the way that connects the Konstanz Minster (where the death sentence for Jan Hus was pronounced on July 6, 1415) with the place in Paradise (Constance) where Jan Hus was at the stake was burned.
