LBN 974 also better known as the Orion Nebula

Lynds' Catalog of Bright Nebulae is an astronomical catalog of bright nebulae .

Objects in this catalog are given the prefix LBN (not to be confused with the LDN of the Lynds' Catalog of Dark Nebulae ). Many of the entries in this catalog can also be found in other collections. For example, LBN 974 , also better known under the name Orion Nebula , can also be found as M 42 or NGC 1976 .

It was originally compiled by Beverly Lynds in the 1960s . This catalog contains, among other things, the coordinates of the nebulae, its own brightness system between 1 and 6, where 1 is the brightest and 6 objects that are just still recognizable, the colors and the apparent sizes of the objects as well as cross-references to other catalogs.
