List of domestic dogs

The Mâtin is a dog breed from France that was probably extinct in the 19th century , which was described in detail by Buffon , among others , and is considered the hypothetical ancestor of some large dog breeds. He had both German Shepherd and Greyhound traits.

The Mâtin plays a role in cynology because his name is often incorrectly translated as Mastiff in English and German translations of Buffon's works .
