The series was built and delivered from 1980 to 1983 by the Danish Odense Staalskibsværft . These were the shipyard's first full container ships, and their development continued in the construction-like ships of the subsequent Mærsk L-class (1983) . The customer for the series was the Copenhagen-based shipping company Maersk Line , with A / SD / S Svendborg & Dampskibsselskabet af 1912 A / S acting as the owner. The shipping company combined the ships of the two L-classes within the shipping company fleet.
The L-class ships are among the Panamax container ships and initially had a capacity of 2052 TEU, with the two units Luna Mærsk and Regina Mærsk being a slightly larger construction variant. After an extension in the mid-1980s, in which the ships of the larger successor series were aligned, the number of slots increased to 3,016 TEU. The ships have eleven holds equipped with cell guides. Seven of the cargo holds closed with pontoon hatch covers were in front, four behind the three-quarters aft. Due to the extension in the central nave, the proportion of cargo space in front of the superstructures increased later.
The twelve-cylinder main engines of the type Burmeister & Wain 12L90GFCA used were among the most powerful two-stroke diesel engines on the market at the time.
Three of the ships, the lead ship Laura Mærsk , the Leise Mærsk and the Lica Mærsk , were taken over by the Military Sealift Command (MSC) of the United States Navy in 1996/97 and converted into auxiliary ships of the Randall D. Shughart class . The remaining ships of the class were sold elsewhere in the second half of the 1990s, partly renamed to re-charter and later operated by other shipping companies, such as the Mediterranean Shipping Company .
