The carrot weevil ( Liparus coronatus ) is a beetle of the weevil family (Curculionidae).
description
The carrot weevil is a smaller member of the Liparus genus . It measures 11–13 mm. The beetles are almost completely black. A line of yellow scales runs along the base of the pronotum. Furthermore, there are two larger spots consisting of yellow scales on each side of the pronotum. The deck wings (elytres) are covered with small pits. They have a strong and pointed thigh tooth.
Distribution and way of life
The beetle species is widespread in Europe. It also occurs in the Caucasus . The beetles can be found on various umbelliferae such as carrots or hogweed ( Heracleum sphondylium ). The larvae develop in the soil and feed on the roots of umbellifers, especially on meadow chervil .
