The Mönchmühle is one of the oldest watermills in Brandenburg . It is located in the Mühlenbeck district in the Mühlenbecker Land community on the Tegeler Fließ . The water wheel is part of the municipality's coat of arms.

history

Around 1230, Cistercian monks founded the Mönchmühle. First a dam about 100 m long and 20 m wide was built. Around 15,000 m 3 of earth were moved in order to finally generate a waterfall height of 4 m and sufficient water power for constant grinding. This was an extraordinary achievement for the time.

The mill building was built directly on the dam wall, which thus forms part of the foundation that has remained unchanged to this day. The mill was in operation until 1973, after which it was subjected to decay and vandalism and is now a monument . Since 2003, a support association has been taking care of the restoration and maintenance of the mill with the aim of developing it into a cultural center for the community in the future. In December 2011 a new mill wheel was installed. The official commissioning of the water wheel, with which environmentally friendly electricity is generated, took place on April 7, 2012.

From November 12 to 16, 2012, the “96 hours” campaign by the RBB took place. The renovation of the historic dance hall began in five days. This was made possible by donations from various construction companies and private individuals as well as the cooperation of many residents and the association. The RBB accompanied the campaign through several broadcasts.
