Músíktilraunir (German Musikexperimente ) is an Icelandic music competition that has been held annually at different venues in Reykjavík since 1982 . In English, the competition is known as Icelandic Music Experiments and is abbreviated to IME .

Músíktilraunir's event, prices and goals

The competition is aimed at musicians aged 13 to 25 who live in Iceland. 40 to 50 bands can take part annually. The winners will receive cash prizes in various categories (a little over 250,000 Icelandic kronor in 2017), invitations to music festivals, travel and playing time in professional studios. The competition wants to:

  • give young Icelandic bands the chance to play their music in front of an audience
  • Give music lovers a forum to watch talented young bands and musicians,
  • Encourage the media to portray and present young musicians and their music,
  • Encourage songwriters to write lyrics in Icelandic.
