The Bulbous files mussel ( Limaria tuberculata , syn .: Limaria inflata hians , Mantellum inflatum ) is a shell - type from the family of limidae (Limidae).

features

The same-hinged, but unequal-sided housing measures up to 45 mm in length, 38 mm in width and 23 mm in cross-section (thickness). It is thus only slightly longer than it is wide, but it is comparatively arched. It is obliquely egg-shaped in outline and elongated obliquely downwards at the front. The posterior side slopes down from the dorsal margin at a flat angle. The rear end is well rounded. The front is slightly arched, the front end tightly rounded. The ventral edge is bulged wide and asymmetrically. The "ears" (appendages) on both sides of the vertebra are very small, triangular and roughly the same size. The two “ears” are pulled forward a little at the top, so they form an acute or roughly right angle. In the dult stage, the two flaps on the front and rear gape constantly, even when the housing is closed. However, the gap at the front is significantly larger than the gap at the rear. The dorsal margin is straight and comparatively wide. The brownish ligament lies in a wide but narrow pit below the vertebra. The lock plate on both sides of the ligament pit is smooth.

The shell is thin but tightly skinned. The ornamentation consists of about 30 to 35 weak, radial ribs, which are somewhat wavy and covered with small pustules. The ribs cause serration on the edge of the housing. Occasionally, finer inter-ribs are also peeled in. The radial ribs are crossed by weak, irregular strips of growth. The ribs also break inwards. The color is almost constant white, rarely with a slight orange tint. The inside of the bowl is glossy white.

Similar species

The bellied file clam is similar to the gaping file clam ( Limaria hians ) in general. The latter, however, is a little longer in relation to the width, a little flatter and has more ribs.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The range of the species is limited to the warmer parts of the east and west Atlantic . In the Eastern Atlantic, it is known from Portugal , the Mediterranean , the Canary Islands and the Azores . But it is missing in the Black Sea . She immigrated to the Red Sea as an anti- Lesseps migrant .

It lives on different surfaces, building nests out of byssus threads and debris in which it resides. But it can swim freely by opening and closing the two flaps quickly.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1792 by Giuseppe Olivi in the original combination Ostrea tuberculata . He referred to the illustration on plate 88, Fig. FF in the pre-Linnaeus work by Niccolò Gualtieri , which clearly identifies the species. Ostrea tuberculata is quasi de facto type species of the genus Limaria Link, 1807, since the formal type species of the genus Limaria , Lima inflata Link, 1807 is a more recent synonym of Limaria tuberculata . The Mollusca Base has four other synonyms : in addition to Lima inflata Link, 1807, Lima cubaniana d'Orbigny, 1853, Lima exilis SV Wood, 1839, Lima imbricata Risso, 1826 and Lima ventricosa GB Sowerby II, 1843. Especially Limaria inflata (Link, 1807) is often found in more modern literature.
