Location above the city

The windmill of Collioure , also known under the French name Le Moulin de la Cortina , 'the mill of Cortina' , is now an oil mill located on the south-eastern edge of Collioure on a plateau above the present museum park. The original grain mill, first mentioned in 1337, can demonstrate the production of olive oil after its restoration in 2001. It is surrounded by a terraced olive grove and is a tourist attraction of the city. It is looked after by the Association des amis du moulin .

history

A grain mill near Collioure was first mentioned in a document dated February 11, 1337, in which Raymond de Toulouse, public prosecutor of the King of Mallorca , to which Collioure and its surroundings belonged at that time, a piece of land called Cortines to a Jacques Ermengald to build and Operation of a grain mill left. This mill is probably the first in Northern Catalonia . It is uncertain whether it was exactly in the same place as today's mill. The mill was in operation until the 19th century and then fell into disrepair.

The tower of the mill was built in 1340. For the years 1420 and 1440 two millers are recorded in the municipality of Collioure. In 1758 there was still a flour mill of Guillaume Siné, d'Argelès, around 1828 another windmill is mentioned under the name “Courtine”, which came from Estienne Estana to Simeon Py and then from 1833 to 1895 belonged to Philippe Thibault. The widow Clara Joseph (née Bouisset) and her sons are named as the other owner. In addition to this mill, there were two oil mills between 1842 and 1864, but they are no longer preserved.

Of the first windmill, only the outer walls of the massive tower remained largely intact. When the property fell to the municipality of Collioure, the mill was reconstructed until 2001 by the mill builder Bernard Garibal with public funds and donations. However, it does not meet today's regulations for food hygiene. The mill is looked after by the Association des amis du moulin , which operates the sight for tourism purposes.

description

The mill is a tower windmill with a rotating hood. At the foot of the tower there is a mule pen and a cellar room. The wind power is transmitted to the vertical upright shaft via a horizontally running vane shaft, a comb wheel and a stick wheel at right angles to it . This drives the slowly running pan mill for squeezing the olives via a spur gear and another stick gear . A vertical millstone made of granite rotates on a horizontal solid millstone also made of granite with a wooden funnel. The pulp-like mass of olives and their pits produced in the pan mill is then pressed in a second step in a wooden hand press that can be dismantled to a liquid mass of water and oil. Oil and water separate after a period of rest. In the Collioure mill, around 1.5 liters of virgin olive oil can be obtained from 10 kg of olives .
