Lerkaka Mills
The Lerkaka Mills ( Swedish Lerkaka kvarnar ) is a series of five post windmills in the village of Lerkaka on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .
The mills are to the east of the road running through the village at the southern end of the village. Like the sturgeon mills further north , the Lerkakaer mills are one of the landmarks of the island of Öland, whose landscape is characterized by historical windmills. The row of mills in the village of Störlinge is longer with seven windmills, but the Lerkaka mills are considered to be one of the most beautiful rows of mills on the island due to their location and good state of preservation.
As in the other areas of Öland, in the course of a strong tradition of self-sufficiency , the mills were only used for the mill owner's own needs. The center of the post mills is a large oak trunk. The mill building itself, including the wings, can be turned into the wind around this trunk.
About 300 to 400 mills are still preserved on Öland today. This roughly corresponds to the number that existed in the middle of the 18th century. By 1850 the number of Öland windmills had reached their highest number at 2000.
There is a rune stone on the opposite side of the street .
