Architecture and history

The open-air swimming pool "Mühltalbad" was built between 1957 and 1959 by the city of Darmstadt according to plans by the architect Ludwig Finkeissen (1908–1983). The first groundbreaking was on May 1, 1957, the ceremonial opening on July 19, 1959.

The building, made of concrete and yellow clinker , is one of the first " adventure pools " in the Federal Republic of Germany . The Z-shaped swimming pool is a diving, competition and children's paddling pool. Jumpers diving into the water can be observed through underwater windows.

The architecture and the open space design represent architecture typical of the time.

In 1965 the swimming championships of the Hessian police were held in the Mühltalbad as part of the Hessentag .

The bath has been heated since 1968. The Mühltalbad has been heated exclusively by solar energy since 1993 .

In 1985 the S-shaped giant slide was put into operation.

Others

The Mühltalbad is fed with water that flows from the Prinzenberg over the old Eberstädter elevated reservoir. In Germany this is something special. The water has medicinal water quality. If there is an occasional lack of water, water from the Darmstadt network is added.

At its peak, 8,000 guests visit the pool every day.
