The Prinzenberg is located on Bergstrasse and in the natural area of the same name, immediately west of the north-western Odenwald, approx. 1 km east of Darmstadt-Eberstadt . The Prinzenberg is a popular excursion destination for Darmstadt citizens in the southeast of the Darmstadt district. The mountain is heavily forested on the north side and on the east side. From the Prinzenberg you can see the Donnersberg in the west when the visibility is good . Worms and Mannheim can be seen in the southwest . The Neunkircher Höhe , the Frankenstein massif and the Melibokus can be seen to the south .

history

The Prinzenberg used to be unwooded and a remote, unprofitable area for the people of Eberstadt. Large parts of the area were afforested in the 19th century. In 1895 a temple (refuge) was built on the summit and then an arboretum was planted. This became an important part of the Eberstadt nature trail. The area is designated as a bird sanctuary according to the EU Natura 2000 directive . The main bird is the hoopoe , which finds the best breeding opportunities in the old fruit trees. Darmstadt's most valuable grassland locations are located at the foot of the Prinzenberg . In the region around the Prinzenberg is the Eberstädter orchard meadow landscape , the largest contiguous orchard meadow area on the Hessische Bergstrasse .

etymology

The Prinzenberg has only had this name since 1836. It was probably named after a member of the grand ducal house of Hesse and the Rhine. Before the hill was called "Hettersberg".

The expression "Hetter", which was mentioned as early as 1484, is difficult to explain. Possibly it means "steep drop at the edge of the forest".

The name Prinzenberg does not come from the term Sprinzen (sources) , as erroneously mentioned in the Darmstadt name booklet .

Others

  • The region around the Prinzenberg is also known as the "Toscana of Darmstadt".
  • At the beginning of the 20th century, flight tests with gliders took place on the Prinzenberg .
  • There is a toboggan run on the western slope.
