M-Disc (in its own spelling M-DISC , short for Millennial Disc) describes a writable digital optical data storage medium , the durability of which is sufficient for long-term data storage . As a write-once data carrier, it is produced in DVD and Blu-ray format.

overview

The advertised storage life of an M-Disc of 1000 years (a millennium; hence the brand and manufacturer name) represents a considerably longer period of time than the durability of conventional DVD ± R and BD-R media. The latter use an organic writing and a reflective layer, which limits the shelf life to five to ten years (when properly stored). Instead of an organic layer, the M-Disc uses an inorganic layer that the manufacturer describes as "rock-like" (rock or stone-like). The M-Disc-DVD is written with a more powerful laser, which is why a special drive is required for writing. The M-Disc-Blu-ray should meet the writing standards of the Blu-ray Disc Association , which means that it can be written to and read in all current standard Blu-ray burners. A written M-Disc is compatible with the DVD or Blu-ray standards and can therefore be read or played in conventional DVD or Blu-ray drives. M-Disc media are available in capacities of 4.7 GB (DVD), 25 GB (Blu-Ray), 50 GB and 100 GB ( BDXL ). As usual, 100 GB media require BDXL-compatible Blu-Ray drives.

Durability tests

On behalf of the manufacturer and with its specifications of the test conditions, Millenniata media of the type M-Disc-DVD were tested by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division , a division of the United States Navy , in a weather chamber together with normal, write-once DVD storage media . The test conditions included ambient temperatures of over 75 ° C, strong UV radiation, which caused the surface temperature of DVDs and M-Discs to rise to around 85 ° C, and high humidity of up to 85%. The M-Disc-DVD was the only medium from which the data could then be read with a low error rate.

If stored poorly, the promised shelf life will not be achieved: As the Laboratoire national de métrologie et d'essais (National Laboratory for Metrology and Experiments) found, at 90 ° C and a humidity of 85% a DVD + R with an inorganic recording layer ( like the M-Disc) does not last longer than a conventional DVD ± R.

history

The M-Disc developer is Millenniata, Inc. The company was founded in 2010 in Utah by Barry Lunt and Matthew Linford, two professors from Brigham Young University , as well as Henry O'Connell (CEO) and Doug Hansen (CTO).
