Based on the former Remington 700 , modified versions were developed for the military over time, known as the M40 and used by the US Marines as a sniper rifle since 1979 . The first models were made in the Remington Custom Shop and received a wooden shaft. However, due to the humidity in the jungles of Vietnam, this was soon replaced by a McMillan fiberglass shaft. With the new stock and other modifications, the M40A1 was born, it was handcrafted by gunsmiths of the Marine Corps . All models such as the M40A1 and the M40A3 (since 1996) are based on a modified Remington 700 system, but differ in components such as the gun barrel, trigger guard and stock. M40A1 and M40A3 consist of the following components:
M40A1 :

- Optics: Unertl-Scope MST-100 with ten times magnification and MilDot reticle

- Recoil Lug: DD Ross

M40A5 :
Since 2009, existing M40A3s have been modified to M40A5. You will receive a modified Schmidt & Bender 3–12 × 50 Police Marksman II LP riflescope, an additional Picatinny rail for attaching a night vision device, a removable magazine and the option of attaching a silencer to the barrel.
Manufacturing :
The weapon is in the Marksman Training Unit in the Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico ( Virginia ) by gunsmiths of the United States Marine Corps made by hand for each sniper training course.
