M99 in February 2016

The M99 - general store with a need for a revolution is a shop of the Berlin autonomous scene at Falckensteinstrasse 46 in Kreuzberg . The shop was founded in 1985 as a copy shop and alternative bookstore in Manteuffelstraße 99 by Hans-Georg "HG" Lindenau, who still runs the shop today.

The alternative magazine Interim , published clandestinely, made unprinted letters accessible via a folder in the shop.

In October 2010 the facade of the shop was damaged in an arson attack. Rapid extinguishing prevented the fire from spreading into the interior rooms in which the operator was staying at the time. A few hundred people, who assumed that the perpetrators were motivated by neo-Nazism, demonstrated in Kreuzberg the following day.

Also in 2010 the M99 and other left bookstores in Berlin were searched several times. The public prosecutor saw the display of issues of the magazines Interim , Prisma and Radikal as “aiding and abetting the conduct of criminal offenses ” and a violation of the weapons law . The proceedings were finally closed in 2011. In total, the store was searched 54 times by the police in the first 30 years of its existence .

In 2015, the business premises and the associated apartment were terminated by the landlord and a court eviction title was obtained on December 31. In January 2016, over 1,000 people demonstrated against the threat of eviction . Berlin's Senator for the Interior Frank Henkel (CDU) announced that the store would be vacated by the end of February as a blow to Berlin's autonomous scene. According to the BZ , the evacuation of the M99 is part of a police “master plan” to drive “left-wing violent criminals from the neighborhood” around Rigaer Strasse in Berlin-Friedrichshain . They would buy items to be disguised in the M99 and print letters of confession there . Negotiations between the owner and Hans-Georg Lindenau emerged from a round table convened in February under the direction of the District Mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Monika Herrmann (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen), which lasted until at least the end of April.

An eviction was announced for the first time on August 9, 2016. Various autonomous and urban political groups then announced protests. The district mayor Monika Herrmann expressed her fear that evacuation of the M99 could further escalate the conflict over the left house project at Rigaer Strasse 94 , which has existed since the end of June . A few days before the announced eviction, this was suspended until September 20, 2016 as part of an agreement between Lindenau and the landlord. An eviction was announced again for September 22nd. On the evening of the previous day, this was suspended by decision of the Berlin Regional Court until Lindenau's state of health was clarified. Lindenau, who is dependent on a wheelchair, had previously filed an application for eviction protection for health reasons with the court.

At the end of March, the expert opinion that was drawn up confirms that an evacuation actually posed a possible threat to Hans Georg Lindenau. However, there was no further dispute as Hans Georg Lindenau moved to Falckensteinstrasse 46 in Kreuzberg. The use of the new premises was made possible for him by the "Redistribution" foundation and the help of the neighborhood.
