MAC ship
A MAC-Schiff ( M erchant A ircraft C arrier, such as trade aircraft carrier ) was a commercial ship , an aircraft on the deck was mounted. The planes weren't in a hangar either , but were parked on deck. In addition to their carrier use, the ships mostly also carried their "normal" cargo. These ships were used on the British side during World War II and belong to the group of Empire ships . There were a total of five different classes of MAC ships with a total of 17 units.
These ships were used to secure trade convoys against submarines . Although only a few aircraft (usually four) could be accommodated on them, they were successful and had a great deterrent effect on attackers. The planes that were used on them were mostly Fairey Swordfish .
Although only auxiliary ships, all of the units survived the war and some of them were later converted back into normal merchant ships.
