Lists on the subject

MAT 49 is the name of a French submachine gun with a compact design. The shoulder rest can be pushed in, the handle with magazine can be folded under the barrel for transport. Thus, the weapon was considered well suited for airborne troops .

It fires cartridges caliber 9 × 19 mm from magazines with a capacity of 20 or 32 rounds. After France withdrew from Vietnam, the weapon was used by Vietnamese units until the supply of 9 mm Parabellum ammunition was exhausted. In addition, the weapon was modified so that Soviet 7.62 × 25 mm Tokarev cartridges could be fired. This weapon is called the MAT 49 mod. designated.

A special version was manufactured for police units under the designation MAT 49/54. This had a longer barrel, partly a solid wooden shoulder rest and offered the possibility of single fire .

Even if the Hk 416 is the standard rifle of the French armed forces today, the MAT 49 is still used by police and military units.
