MKVToolNix is a free collection of programs for creating and editing Matroska multimedia files. Because it is open source, free and there are versions for all major operating systems, MKVToolNix is one of the most popular applications for this task. Especially for macOS users , the selection of such high-quality programs is small.

Overview

The program consists of several command line applications ( mkvmerge, mkvinfo, mkvextract, mkvpropedit ) and a graphical user interface (GUI). The program uses the libraries libebml and libmatroska for reading and writing EBML or Matroska container files .

Due to its complexity, MKVToolnix is aimed at users with advanced knowledge, and especially the command line programs are not intuitive and therefore very difficult to use by inexperienced users.

With version 8, the old wxWidgets -based GUI was replaced by one based on Qt .
