MacWrite was the graphics word processing program that shipped with the first Apple Macintosh in 1984 . MacWrite and the MacPaint drawing program , which also shipped with the first Macs, were the first programs to make WYSIWYG widespread on Macintosh and personal computers.
function
Before MacWrite there were only character-based text programs that a limited ASCII - character set used, both for the screen image was also used as for printing. The formatting was carried out using different key combinations , which often required several fingers at the same time, and yet the print image was only visible on the paper after it was printed out and often had to be corrected. WordStar , which was widely used at the time, is an example of this type of word processing .
With MacWrite, many end users were able to edit their texts for the first time using the new concepts and techniques that have hardly changed today. The menu at the top left of the screen, the scroll bars, rulers, storage containers for normal and decimal tab stops , which you could move to the desired position with the mouse , etc. In the main menu there was not only storage , editing and finding , but also format , Character set and style for different rulers, paragraph formats, character sets - New York , Geneva , Toronto , Monaco , Chicago , Venice , London and Athens were all included as standard in 8, 12, 14, 18, 24 points - as well as standard print , bold type , italic , Underline, Outline, and Shaded.
