Macarena Eugenia Santelices Cañas (born August 15, 1977 in Viña del Mar ) is a Chilean journalist and politician . She was Minister for Women and Gender Equality from May 6 to June 9, 2020.

Family and education

Macarena Santelices is the daughter of Ana Eugenia Cañas Pinochet and Luis Santelices Barrera, who was mayor of Los Andes from 1986 to 1989 during the military dictatorship . She is the great niece of the former dictator Augusto Pinochet . She studied communication science at the University of Viña del Mar and graduated as a journalist. This was followed by a master's degree in communication at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain. Since 2012 she has been married to the scriptwriter and director Eduardo "Lalo" Prieto, with whom she has two children.

Act

Santelices initially worked for several years as a journalist and television presenter for the television channels UCV Television, La Red, Mega and Canal 13 before she became active as a politician.

Her political career began in 2008 when she was elected city councilor for Olmué, a small town in the Valparaiso region . Four years later, she was elected mayor of the same city with an absolute majority and was confirmed in this position in 2016. In October 2019, she resigned from her post as mayor because she wanted to run as a candidate for governor of the Valparaiso region in the 2020 elections.

Appointment as Minister for Women

On May 5, 2020, President Sebastián Piñera appointed her Minister for Women and Gender Equality, a position she assumed the following day. Her appointment caused much criticism and violent protests. The main reason for this is that Santelices, which belongs to the right-wing UDI ( Unión Democrática Independiente ), never distanced itself from the military dictadur of Pinochet and, for example, was quoted in 2016 as saying that good things are not under the military regime may forget. Other reasons were her statements against migrants and also that she had no experience in women's politics. A statement by Coordinadora Feminista 8M, a broad alliance of social, feminist and trade union organizations, said, “Your appointment is a threat to the lives of women, lesbians, transvestites, trans and non-binary, a provocation to the feminist movement and our historical memory, and we will not allow someone who embodies everything we accuse to be at the head of this ministry ”. The hashtag #NoTenemosMinistra (We do not have a minister) quickly achieved widespread use in social networks.

resignation

On the day of his resignation June 9, 2020 with President Piñera and successor Mónica Zalaquett

After only 34 days in office, Santelices had to resign. Her short term in office was marked by criticism and protests. After her first week in office, she talked about feminist movements “aiming at chaos, destruction and disqualification”.

There were also allegations that she had covered a case of sexual assault against a school principal while she was Mayor of Olmué.

In early June 2020, she was forced to withdraw a video that her ministry broadcast as part of a campaign against violence against women. Women's associations had criticized the portrayal of perpetrators as victims.

When she made Jorge Ruz, who is known for his sexist headlines in the newspaper “La Cuarta”, head of the study department of the Ministry for Women and Gender Equality a short time later, this apparently led not only to protests but also to resentment in the cabinet. The controversial appointment was reported in the media on June 8, 2020, and on June 9, 2020, after only 34 days in office, Santelices submitted her resignation. Her successor was Mónica Zalaquett .
