American Samoa

American Samoa qualified via the 2017 Junior World Championships in Mauritius when they were able to leave their competitors Australia behind. Trainer Floor, also the father of two of the players, nominated only eight of the nine possible players, the goalkeeper Salatupemasina Toilolo, who belongs to the nine-squad, was already on the journey with the team, but had to leave the team in New York and return home due to a family death . Thus, the team went into the tournament without a nominal goalkeeper.

In the end, Micaela Corimberto and Pilar Lana fell out of the squad that had crystallized out to reach the size of nine players.

Mauritius

The team was made up of players who had only started the sport in their home country shortly before the Junior World Championships the year before and were supplemented by a few other players who had started playing later but already had experience in other sports. Two thirds of the players came from the Moka Rangers sports club , which is best known for its football division, but also offers handball. Chloé Bax, for example, is an outstanding rugby 7 player. Although last placed at the domestic tournament, the team qualified as there were no other participating teams from Africa.
