Marit Jaëlle van Ede (born December 26, 2001 in Nieuwegein ) is a Dutch handball player on the center back position . As a beach handball player , she also plays on the central defensive, and alternatively as a circle runner , right winger or specialist on the offensive.

Indoor handball

Marit van Ede started playing handball in her hometown Nieuwegein. At the age of ten she moved to the FIQAS Aalsmeer club , and in 2018 to the first division club Vlug en Lenig (V&L) in Geleen , where she played with her national beach handball team colleague Marit Crajé . In 2019 she was fifth with the team in the ten league, in 2020 the season was terminated prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Vlug en Lenig were seventh in the regular season in the relegation round, where they took first place after half of the games.

Van Ede achieved her greater successes so far in beach handball, where she took part in the Beachhandball Junior European Championships (U17) for the first time in 2017 on Lake Jarun near Zagreb . In the preliminary round, the Ukraine, Romania, Poland and Germany achieved clear two-set victories, the Dutch only won in the shootout in the last game against co-favorites Hungary. In the last two games of the group stage against Germany and Hungary, she also played very aggressively and was the second best Dutch thrower with eight and ten points respectively. The Dutch women entered the knockout games as the undefeated first in the group. The quarter-final game against Lithuania was also clearly won, but van Ede had to leave the pitch prematurely after two time penalties. In the semi-final game against Germany, which was won in the shootout, van Ede was the outstanding Dutch player. With 18 points she scored by far the most points, the second-best thrower Jessie van de Ruit scored three points, the rest of the Dutch team together 12. The final against Portugal's selection was won in two hard-fought rounds and the Dutch women won the title . With eleven goals, van Ede was again the best thrower.

In the following month, van Ede was part of the Dutch selection, which took part in the U-17 World Championships held for the first time in Flic-en-Flac on Mauritius . After a clear victory over Taiwan in their preliminary group, they were the first in the group to qualify for the main round, as the other two group opponents from Brazil and Togo had withdrawn their teams. In the main round group, Croatia, Argentina and Hungary were defeated three world-class youth teams, although Argentina and Hungary only in the shootout. The Dutch women went into the knockout games without losing points. After beating Thailand in the quarter-finals, Argentina was defeated in the semi-finals. It was only in the final that van Ede and her team suffered the first defeat of the tournament, they were defeated by Hungary in the shootout.

The 2018 U-18 European Junior Championships in Ulcinj , Montenegro , were similar to the previous year's World Championships. After clear victories over Ukraine, the hosts from Montenegro and Lithuania, the Dutch women were first in the knockout group. Against the Ukraine she was the second best thrower of her team after Lynn Klesser with nine points , against Lithuania she even scored half of all the points of her team with 17 points. A strong team, Croatia, was eliminated in the quarter-finals, but van Ede was not allowed to end the game after two time penalties. In the semi-finals, the Dutch won against Germany in two sets and were once again in the final. Van Ede was next to Nyah Metz, with ten points, the second best thrower after Lynn Klesser. As in the World Championships the year before, the Netherlands were only defeated in the final and again to the team from Hungary. In addition to Klasser, van Ende was the Oranjes' best thrower with eight points. The election of the best player of the tournament was a personal success.

Participation in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires , where beach handball was played for the first time as part of the Olympic Games, was the highlight of the junior women’s time. In the first win against Paraguay, van Ede acted inconspicuously. It was different in the second game against Hong Kong, in which she was the team's best thrower with 14 points, gave five assists, caused a penalty and earned a time penalty. In the win against Turkey van Ede showed a few lack of concentration and lost the ball three times, a high number for beach handball. In the shootout victory against Venezuela, Amber van der Meij was the only one to score two more than van Ende with 14 points. She also gave three assists, but again made two heavy ball losses. In the final victory over the strong hosts, van Ende again acted inconspicuously and was mainly used on the defensive. In the first game in the main round, a 2-1 win in the shootout over Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), she played mainly on the defensive and caused two penalty throws. When she won the shootout over Croatia, she was completely without a point. In the defeat in the shootout against the Hungarians, van Ende was able to show more offensive actions with eight points. Despite the defeat, the Netherlands reached the semi-finals as first in the group. After a convincing tournament up to then, however, they were clearly defeated by the Croatian team in two sets. Van Ede played once again mainly on the defensive and caused a penalty and lost the ball. The Dutch women also lost the game for the bronze medal against the representation of Hungary, the permanent rivals of recent years. On the offensive, van Ede only set a few accents with two points from four attempts and one assist. On the defensive, she again caused a heavy loss of the ball, but was also able to block an attempt by the Hungarians. With 50 points scored and 13 assists, she was moderately successful, her three time penalties were the maximum value for her team.

The following year, van Ede was part of the Dutch national women's beach handball team for the Euro 2019 beach handball in Stare Jabłonki . Like her teammate Lisanne Bakker , Amber van der Meij and Anna Buter , she made the direct jump from the junior to the senior national team. Lynn Klesser was only removed from the squad just before the tournament. In the preliminary round, the Dutch first defeated Romania and Turkey, against Turkey with the Olympic starter Dilek Yılmaz in the team, van Ede was third-best thrower with ten points after Krista Mol and Isabel Barnard with 12 points each. Against Croatia, which also played with two players from the Youth Olympic Games - Anja Vida Lukšić and Petra Lovrenčević - was lost in the shootout. In the following victory in the shooutout over Norway van Ede was not used. Behind Norway, the "Oranjes" moved into the main round as the runner-up in their preliminary group. Van Ede was also not used in the first game in the main round, a clear victory over Poland. For the victory against the long-standing competitors from Hungary - they too started with five players in the Youth Olympic Games, Rebeka Benzsay , Csenge Braun , Gréta Hadfi , Réka Király and Gabriella Landi - von Ede was part of the team again, as he did for the rest of the tournament, and scored six points. In the final victory over Portugal, she was the most successful Dutch woman with eleven points. As the runner-up in the main round behind Croatia, the Dutch women moved into the quarter-finals, where they met Greece, which was defeated in the shootout. In the semifinals there was another duel with Hungary, which was lost in two sets. In the final game for the bronze medal, Croatia was beaten this time and almost outclassed, especially in the first round. It was the only game in which she was used by van Edes in which she was not one of the three best throwers, but only scored two points. With 54 points she was the fourth most successful female thrower in her team.
