Macaroni and cheese (often shortened to mac and cheese ) is a pasta dish that is particularlywidespreadin North America and Great Britain . For this, macaroni aremixed with a cheese sauce and usually baked in the oven with grated cheese. There are many recipes and variants for the exact composition of the dish, the sauce and the types of cheese to be used.

History of origin and distribution

There is an assumption that Thomas Jefferson invented the dish. This is not true, but when Jefferson returned to America in 1790 he brought a Neapolitan pasta machine with him. A macaroni recipe from his pen has been preserved in his estate ; however, it does not provide for cheese.

The dish is an integral part of everyday American cuisine and is part of the standard menu in many diners , also as a side dish to the barbecue . It was marketed as a ready-made meal in 1937 by the Kraft Foods company under the name "Kraft Dinner" (today in the USA under the name "Kraft Macaroni & Cheese" ).

In Switzerland there is a similar dish called Älplermagronen .
